Smartsheet MCP server introduction

Interact with your project data in Smartsheet using the Smartsheet MCP server connected to Claude, ChatGPT, and other AI clients. Once connected, you can use natural language to read, analyze, and manage Smartsheet data to complement how you make decisions and get work done.

Required plan: Business, Enterprise, or Advanced Work Management

🚀 What's new!

  • MCP Connectors for ChatGPT, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Gemini Enterprise Plus, and Amazon Quick: Work with your Smartsheet projects in ChatGPT, Microsoft 365 Copilot (plus configuration video), Gemini Enterprise Plus, and Amazon Quick.
  • CLI Agent Power Tools available!: Use these open-source sub-agents locally to scan for bottlenecks and risks, clone project sheets, reassign tasks, and prepare for stand-ups and status communication. Check out the CLI Agent Power Tools overview.
  • Automated workflow management tools: Create, enable/disable, and list your sheet workflow automations. Learn more at Automated workflows.
  • Scenario planning tools: Experiment with project plan variations, mitigate risks, and increase project velocity right from within you favorite AI assistant. Refer to Scenario planning for details.
  • Plan management tools: List a user's plans, query user seat usage and activity, and get license usage snapshots for plans. Check out the details at User plans.
  • Portfolio tools: Create and manage portfolios, including templates and projects. Learn more at Portfolios.

Our Quickstart walks you through connecting the Smartsheet MCP server as an interactive companion in Claude Code. (These connection principles work across MCP-compatible AI clients.)

Why use the MCP server?

The Smartsheet MCP server bridges the gap between Smartsheet and AI models, allowing you to:

  • Access Smartsheet data in real time
  • Apply AI reasoning with Smartsheet's project and data management features
  • Integrate with popular AI platforms including ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, Microsoft 365 Copilot, and Gemini Enterprise Plus, or custom AI clients.
  • Automate complex tasks that require both data analysis and decision-making

Instead of manually copying data into an AI or writing custom API integrations, you can connect Smartsheet to AI clients to query projects, transform data, and trigger actions.

How it works

The MCP server exposes Smartsheet capabilities as tools that AI models can invoke. When you integrate Smartsheet with an AI client:

  1. The AI client can access (with your consent) predefined tools to summarize sheets, create rows, update data, and more.
  2. The client determines which tools are needed to solve your requests.
  3. The MCP server executes the request and returns structured data.
  4. The AI client processes the results and provides a response.

This enables natural interactions like: "Show me all overdue tasks from the Marketing sheet and create a summary report" or "Update all project statuses based on the latest timeline changes."
